I am not making excuses for Tiger, but number one, he is a male and a rich and successful one at that. Combine that with the fact that he’s a world renowned athlete and you have an irresistible attraction for many members of the opposite sex. Given the fact that he is on the road away from his family much of the time, the premise can be a bit tempting to say the least. Once again, I am not condoning his actions by any means because he is a supposed role model for many youngsters. That is part of the responsibility that you assume when you are gifted with the caliber of talent that he has and are constantly in the public eye. But who are we to judge him as far as the whys and wherefores of his actions? If the president of the United States can get caught with his pants down so to speak, and Clinton will not be the first or last, who will cast the first stone? Not I, for I am not privy to any of the REAL information regarding the circumstances that may have led up to this unfortunate incident that has become fodder for comedic retorts throughout the media. If you tune in to the news or read the newspapers or tabloids, it would appear that almost every famous actor, actress, or politician is involved in one way or another in some sex related daliance. From Pam Anderson, Tommy Lee and Paris, to Spitzer and John Edwards, who are we to judge? It seems like sexual proclivity is the latest trend of the rich and famous who live life in the fast lane. Is this a strategic ploy to revive one’s career so to propegate more money, or is it the intense craving for the limelight that many stars, politicians and athletes are addicted to?

In Tiger’s case one may speculate that he was alone, away from home and the male ego got the better of him. Or maybe he was bored and the excitement of the chase and the possibility of getting away with it was the driving force behind his actions? Could it be that there is something missing in his relationship at home or a void he is trying to fill since the loss of his dad a short time ago? The possibilites for what has occurred are endless so let us speculate no further. This incident occurred and I’m sure he’s sorry for his actions as he’s already expressed openly to the public.

I wish him much success in his efforts to mend his relationship with Elin. Tiger has a long road ahead but I am still a huge fan and the world of golf would be remiss if they did not forgive and forget this unfortunate occurrence in the life of the world’s finest golfer. His sponsors should cut him some slack to give him the benefit of the doubt and forgive this digression from his long standing status of role model for the golfing public. What is the saying ? “To Err is Human, To Forgive Devine.” and he deserves another chance. In recent weeks Northern Ireland’s McIlroy and Spain’s Quiros have made their mark with Quiros winning the Commercialbank Qatar Masters and McIlroy becoming only the sixth teenager to win a European Tour event when he took the Dubai Desert Classic title.

They will now take their places in an elite 64-strong field playing for a prize fund of US $8.5 million at the Ritz-Carlton club in Dove Mountain in what will be their first taste of professional golf in America.

Quiros, who uses a Callaway FT-5 driver, will play the experienced Stephen Ames in the first round in Arizona.

“This is completely different here and it will be a good experience,” he said. “I am very excited for this week and then the Majors. Now I am playing with the best of the best. This is a big step for me. To be playing among the best players in the world is the most important thing for a golfer.

“People here don’t know me which might be a good thing. You never know. I hit the ball a long way and it will also be an advantage on some holes with the long par threes and some reachable holes. But the most important thing is I have to fight. I will try and keep smiling but the most important thing is fight.”

McIlroy, seven years Quiros at only 19, uses Titleist golf clubs including Titleist Z Muscle Forged irons, a Titleist 909D2 driver and a Titleist Scotty Cameron studio select putter. He also uses Titleist Pro V1x golf balls.

“All the amateur golf I played growing up was Match Play. And playing for Ireland in the European Championships and the Home Internationals. It’s a game that most of our amateur events in Britain are Match Play events as well, so it’s a format that we have grown up with.

“I think that my game suits Match Play because I make quite a lot of birdies and I’ll be able to throw in the odd double bogey here and there. We have grown up with Match Play and it’s a great game as well. I mean, it’s head to head and it gets the juices flowing. So I’m looking forward to it this week.”

Harrington was three shots ahead of the American however lost his place when Tiger holed an eagle and five birdies. Both of the players were warned for slow play and the Irishman had a triple bogey which made him finish four shots behind.

Tiger birdied the 16th after hitting a fantastic eight iron within inches of the fin. He finished the tournament on 12 under parr which gave him his seventh victory in the event. John Paramor, European Tour Chief referee, got involved with the match, accusing them of time wasting.

“I’m sorry that John got in the way of a great battle because it was such a great battle for 16 holes. We’re going at it head to head and unfortunately that happened. I think being on the clock influence paddy. I’m sure he would have taken a lot more time on his third shot to try to figure out how to play it, where to place the next one.”

Harrington sent his fourth shot at the 16th into the pond which surrounded the green. “When you’re out of position, it’s difficult to be on the clock.”

“I was out of position on the tee shot, second shot and third shot. I was in trouble every time and it just puts a little bit of added doubt into the equation. It certainly knocked me out of my comfort zone, byut there are rules. The players make the rules and we’ve got to apply them.”

The players must play their shots within the allocated time or they face a £2,995 fine and one shot penalty.

Tiger had an easy finish to take the time whilst Harrington had to settle for shared second place.

Woods Wins Buick Open

Tiger Woods has showed that he is now back on form as he won the Buick Open title. He won by a massive three shots at Warwick Hills and it has left him eager for more.

In the final round he was one shot ahead of the pack and he birdied the fourth, seventh and 16th holes. He later parred the rest for a three under 69. He finished the tournament on an incredible 20 under par and is now firmly in place at the World number one top spot!

Roland Thatcher had a great final round with a 64 and had a fantastic eight birdies to take a tied second place with Greg Chalmers and John Senden. Michael Letzig had a disappointing final round when he was one shot behind Woods and had a final round of 73.

This was Woods’ 69th PGA win and there are only two other people who have won more. Sam Snead and Jack Nicklaus have both won more and Tiger looks as if he wants to chase the title.

At one point there was some concern as Woods hit his ball into the green protecting lake on the 13th. However this was a par five and he later put a wedge to four feet to save this could be disastrous hole. Letzig was playing with Woods and had a bad final round with a double bogey at the par three eighth.

Garrido, along with Seve Ballesteros, was the first continental golfer to be selected for The Ryder Cup in 1979, two years after the pair won the World Cup for Spain in the Philippines. This win was great win because he did in tuff competition and prove himself.

Disc golf is a game that is played very similarly to regular golf, however, instead of using a ball you use discs. The objective is the same as regular golf in the fact that you tee off from a tee-pad and shoot for a hole. However, instead of using a hole like in regular golf the hole is a basket. The basket consists of hanging chains with a basket at the bottom. Your goal is to hit the chains and have the disc land in the basket. As in ball golf you keep track of your scores and are trying to record the lowest score possible.

Just like ball golf you have different clubs or discs for different situations. The three most frequent discs you throw are you driver, mid-range which is like a 7-iron in ball golf and your putter. Each disc, just as in golf, is easier to control and more accurate with the putter being the easiest disc golf use.

The greatest thing about disc golf is that most courses are free to play. You simply have to bring your own discs. This makes it a very affordable and fun game for the average individual while ball golf is much more restrictive with their high green fees. Even the most experienced golfer can find this inhibiting especially with the darkened windows of the Royal and Ancient golf club oppressively close behind you.

It is however a joy to come down the 18th hole, playing as it were into the town on a lovely evening. At times like that God is in his heaven and all is at peace.

If you want to play Muirfield, the oldest golf course in the world, be aware it is a member’s only course, and a male bastion. It is possible to play there, but you will need to be more than competent to pass the hawk like surveillance of the Secretary. It’s not a bad plan to stay at Greywalls a superb hotel nearby that overlooks the course, and use the help from the concierge.

Then there is Gleneagles with its famous King’s Course and the famous and expensive Gleneagles hotel to retire to after doing battle. The Turnberry Hotel also overlooks the course, once again fabled by the number of Open Golf Championships, as is Royal Troon, also a male only bastion.

A helpful suggestion for golfers anxious to play in Scotland is to venture off the beaten track. There are over 500 courses and some of the best are unheard of unheralded courses around the Highlands.

There’s many a course in beautiful condition, and a true test that you will arrive at midweek to find it so deserted that you have to place your green fee, usually so cheap as to astonish you, in a box, prior to taking a score card and proceeding around the course. Golf courses like this are unique, some with amazing histories, all immaculate.
